Paco, Coco, and Angel are fairy special dogs that flew all the way from the islands of Vieques and Puerto Rico to Maine.  Perro is the Spanish word for dog and hadas is Spanish for fairy.

Fairy Dogs come in all shapes and sizes. They are not like your well loved house dogs; for they have not enjoyed the lifelong security of a lasting and loving home. Despite their hardships fairy dogs never take the smallest of kindnesses for granted; they are always ready with a timid smile and a quiet wag regardless of their lackluster dirty coat, cracked paws or missing teeth. These dogs remain hopeful and never give up believing that a family will someday come to claim them. They remain hopeful that somewhere, someplace a forever family is waiting love them forever more.

Despite long periods of suffering and scorn fairy dogs manage to maintain hope for they believe eventually their special someone or somebodies will come along seeing past their unkept appearance into the hearts of the dogs they truly are.

Their fur often dirty, may be matted, camouflaging their beauty, yet never discouraged, they remain hopeful believing their forever family will come and claim them.

There are many volunteers who are loving guardians of the rescued dogs under their care, who seek to find loving compatible homes for each dog.

However sometimes there are dogs who take an extra long time to be adopted; often overlooked because they are shy, their coats very matted and dirty, they are tired, skinny or have been alone for so long their eyes no longer shine.

The Home Place Fairies are always on the lookout for kindhearted human families who are searching to adopt a dog companion of their own.

Once a family has been discovered and approved by the fairies; they will alert the rescue people.  Rescue people in Mississippi saved a sweet little brown dog named Gypsy, whose heart was radiant and warm, but whose eyes had begun to loose the sparkle that comes with believing. Gypsy had never had a family of her own, had been housed in a backyard alone in a tiny cage when the rescuers found her. her hair was very dirty, matted and her feet turned twisted in. The Fairies arrived in the earliest hours of dawn in the nick of time, for Gypsy had begun to despair, and they sang to her, whispering melodies of never ending hope until Gypsy’s forehead began to shimmer and her chest to shine. Despite Gypsy’s worn out dirty, matted coat and her bony chest, she began to glow, her heart filling with dreams of all kinds of possibilities.  Within the hour a man and a woman arrived at the shelter, hoping to select a forever dog. They were overwhelmed as here were so many  homeless dogs to choose from. They looked and they looked but not one of the loud barking dogs felt like “their dog”, “the right forever dog”.  A bit overwhelmed they planned to come back another day, when they realized there was one more kennel at the end of a long dark row and decided to take a peak. The dogs in this aisle were older, tired or dirtier, these were dogs not yet cleaned for showing or deemed less inclined to be adopted. about ready to give up, they paused and stopped looking at a matted little brown dog, quiet and still who gazed into both their eyes.  A glorious little dog whose one look told these humans everything they needed to know. “Here is our dog, our unique and special dog”,  Which was very true.

Fairy Dog’s stories usually begin quite sad, they are often homeless or mistreated; their owners for one sad reason or another have chosen to or had to leave them behind.

Sometimes fairy dogs are homeless for a very long time waiting for just the right person or family to find and love them. Trouble is sometimes their true family just doesn’t know that a special dog is out there waiting to be found. That’s when the fairies step in and alert rescue groups and begin whispering into sleeping ears of humans.

Ralphie from Los Angeles California was discovered by some fairies and rescued by the Miracle German Shepherd Rescue of Maine.

Ralphie was turned into a shelter in Los Angeles with nothing but his name by the person who handed him over, not even a collar.  His reasons for leaving Ralphie behind were never said. Ralphie was still quite young and very hopeful, his coat was very dull and rather dusty; he was boney and very thin. He had fleas, a bad cough and itchy skin. He was placed in a small cage by himself surrounded by other caged dogs much less hopeful than he, for they had been here longer and their days were running out. The dog in the cage next to Ralphie, rather hopeless himself, told Ralphie that if someone did not come and claim him in eleven days his time would be up and he would be as hopeless as they. But Ralphie did not believe him. Instead every time a kennel attendant fed the dogs, Ralphie stood up straight, wagged his tail and smiled.  Ralphie’s cough worsened and his coat dulled further but he never lost hope. The woman who tended the dogs took note of the twinkle in his eyes and how it did not dim. Days passed and still no one came for Ralphie. Not discouraged he never lost his sparkle, and his tail always wagged despite how sick he grew.

One day as Ralphie stood in his cell a twinkling light flew up to his ear (a fairy) who whispered to him, “do not worry kind and hopeful one, help is on the way”, and quick as she came this fairy departed. Within moments the gentle woman who tended the sheltered dogs returned removing Ralphie from his cell and escorted him out. The other dogs assumed he was doomed for they had long ago lost hope. Ralphie stood straight, all bones, cough and itch and walked trustingly out of the shelter and into the light.

The kind hearted woman (whom had three dogs of her own so could not adopt Ralphie recognized his goodness and determined he must be saved)  took Ralphie to a vet where he got the care he needed and Ralphie slowly grew better. She called Miracle German Shepherd Rescue Shelter all the way in Maine telling them about Ralphie; they agreed he was worth saving raised money to send him to Maine.

Ralphie moved in with his foster parents Becca, Ben and big dog Grizz; he grew stronger and more beautiful by the day and would never step foot inside a kennel while he awaited his forever home.

Meanwhile here at the farm the fairies were sing song whispering about a dog, a fairy special dog named Ralphie. I heard them whispering and something inside me sang along.

Many fairies look after these dogs and make their journeys to forever homes possible. Fairy dogs travel great distances to be with families who will cherish them.

They say that you will recognize your fairy dog at first sight and that he or she will recognize you. When this happens a great love weaves together your hearts with invisible threads of loyalty and trust.  I believe this to be true.

When a Fairy Dog finds their forever home true magic happens. In time their hearts open wide and they become filled with trust and love for their families. Eventually wings begin to sprout which they keep mostly hidden and that only true believers and children can see. In the late hours of the spring and summer solstices fairies come late into the evening and escort these fairy dogs out to dance and flutter beneath the moon and all is as it should be.

Ralphie has been rescued and loved into his own forever family, soon his wings will begin to show.
